Feng Shui is a popular Chinese practice where the positive and negative energies are analyzed through the positioning of objects. There is a particular place for everything in order to attract the good energy and to bring fortune, luck, good health, love and protection, among many others. Clutter is a big no-no as Feng Shui emphasizes that it blocks the flow of energy or chi in the room. Balance is also prioritized to have the yin and yang.

If you have seen a Feng Shui consultation, you would notice how the arrangements of things are emphasized. There should be no twists and turns in the movement, but rather have a continuous flow of motion. Therefore, if you have to make your way around an armchair and always bump your knee in the table to get to the couch, then Feng Shui might be telling you to rearrange your furniture. The flow is important for the energy to create positivity, usually denoting a healthy environment.

Of course, when you think about feng shui, you rarely think about the role that area rugs might play in the design. Since area rugs are not a feature which people frequently move around, they assume that an area rug will have no influence on the feng shui of a room. This is a misconcetion however, for feng shui will deal with every single object in a room. Every object gives off energy that feeds into the chi and area rugs are no exception.

The color too greatly influences the Feng Shui of a room. Colors are believed to dictate the mood. Thus, the colors of the area rugs also contribute to the positive or negative mood. An over supply of soft colors can be too relaxing while a monopoly of bold colors can give tension to the room.

For creating a positive energy, the right texture of an area rug can somehow influence the chi. A hard floor can be balanced out by a soft, thick rug. It will also make the room more inviting.

One of the biggest factors on the chi of a room is how much a person enjoys being in it. The energy that a person both gives off and takes while in a room will set the mood of that room. Having a healthy chi means having a room which accepts people into its space without much struggle. The area rug may be one of the quickest means of doing so.

Chi is considered to be the most important principle of feng shui. It is the entire purpose that one adopts this decorating technique for because when you use feng shui, you are trying to optimize the flowing of the chi throughout the room. Chi is the energy which every single object gives off. That chi will be radiated from these objects and will pick up on currents which move throughout the space. Opening up the passage ways of this current will play a large part in making the chi move successfully through a room.

The flow of chi is determined by many natural factors. Some objects will evoke more chi than others and some objects will block the chi instead of helping it to pass by and flow. Figuring out what these objects are and placing them in areas where they will help the flowing of the room is crucial. One of the best ways that the flow can help to be determined is by how well any one person can move throughout the room.

According to Feng Shui, if the objects are arranged in such a way that you need to move around the objects, it signifies negativity. This blocks the chi or good energy from getting into the room. A cluttered space similarly blocks of positive energy.

The textures and shape in the room can also affect the flow of chi. If the floors are too cold for comfort, utilize an area rug to counterbalance the unpleasant feeling and help the chi to flow better.

While objects such as coffee tables or end tables can be a great way for people to have places to rest their drinks and other items, they need to be placed well within the room. If they cause the flow of the chi to be blocked, the emotions which take place in that room will be more aggravated and tense. You can see this by observing how the people who spend time in that room act and react to their surroundings. Excess movement will inhibit the flow of chi and make people irritable.

Feng Shui claims that the flow of energy has direct effects on the mood and well-being of people. A smooth-flowing chi can lead to good health, prosperity and good fortune. A blocked chi meanwhile brings forth bad luck, sickness, tension and temper. You know your place well, so you can feel how energy is flowing in your home. Take some time to check your furnishings. You might be warding off the good chi from bringing good luck to your home.

Considered by many to be the most ancient form of decorating, feng shui takes ancient Chinese principles and applies them to the way that you arrange the furniture throughout your home. The theory behind feng shui is that every single object gives off an energy, which is called its “chi.” That chi will flow throughout the room and entire living space, affecting the people within that space in very specific ways. Learning how to arrange the room so that the chi is at its optimal performance level is important.

Feng Shui requires years of serious study and more years of practice to be truly efficient. It has started thousands of years ago and is still developing up until this day.

Feng Shui is not as simple as knowing which objects need to be rearranged. Every detail must be analyzed and everything must be related with each other. Fortunately, for those who only want some basic information, it is possible to practice Feng Shui in your home.

On the other hand, using Feng Shui in simple ways is possible. The most basic thing to do is to listen to your instincts. It’s nothing new given that we hear this all the time. Nevertheless, it works. You will feel if something is not right, and that is energy pulling at you. If you feel comfortable in a room, then the flow of energy is going the right way.

Certain objects affect the flow of chi and one important item is the area rug. This decor has such a huge impact on the over-all look of the room that its color, texture and placement can affect the flow of energy. Is the color too loud? Is the rug’s texture too thin from preventing cold from the floor, therefore causing much discomfort? Does the rug look off from where it is placed?

One must not be afraid to make mistakes as well. Making mistakes will be the only thing which accurately teaches a person how to perform great feng shui. Through trial and error, one will begin to learn techniques which make them and their guests feel comfortable. Mistakes will be the driving force for fixing the problem and making the room work right. Attention to chi will only grow and one’s feng shui skills will blossom.
