The Responsibilities of Caring for Freshwater Fish,Some Things You Should Know About Freshwater Fish Care

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Some people may be of the mind that freshwater fish care is a seemingly non-existent process. However, freshwater fish should not be thought of as a pet that can easily be set up and forgotten about. Fish require a certain amount of care, and as with any pet, only those who are willing to take on the responsibility for another life should entertain the idea of a pet. However, you should consider the fact that pets can be excellent pets for both busy and laid-back lifestyles.

First before you buy any fish make sure that you do adequate research concerning the fish of your choice; but take your time, as there are many types of freshwater fish. Make sure you don’t put various types of aggressive fish in the same tank. This will lead to an early destruction of your tank. Also when researching the fish you want to make sure to understand what kind of habitat they need. Since we are doing a freshwater tank make sure the fish aren’t saltwater fish. This is another guaranteed way to end the life of the fish quickly..

Make sure that you understand the feeding requirements of your fish before you bring them home. Some fish require certain types of food, as well as a particular feeding routine. You should be especially careful about not over-feeding or under-feeding your fish, as well. If you are unsure about how much food you should give them, don’t hesitate in calling the store or person you bought the fish from–they will likely be happy to assist you.

Cleaning the fish tank is a very important aspect of fish maintenance, yet one that doesn’t have to be done everyday. The general tip is that one third of the water in the tank should be changed out monthly to ensure that the fish have a clean, healthy environment. Remember–fish breathe through the water in the tank, and if it’s too dirty, they won’t be able to breath very well.

If you remember to follow these steps and act accordingly when purchasing a freshwater aquarium fish, then you will be fine. Your fish should live a healthy life and last as long as they are supposed to.

Requirements For Testing Water In A Freshwater Aquarium

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Testing of water in a fresh water aquarium involves two steps, the first is when you first start an aquarium and the second stage is when the tank has already been established and you have fish in them.

Fish thrive or die, depending on the water quality, so it is imperative for their health that you understand the sort of conditions and the quality of water that your fish need to live healthily. This is not uniform for all fishes, so a bit of study is necessary.

Procedure for a new fish tank:

You first need to establish that the nitrogen cycle has taken place. This is important because after this cycle has occurred it is safe to add fish. Fish waste and undigested food lead to an ammonia spike. This is the first stage of the nitrogen cycle and you can detect this by an Ammonia test. After this friendly bacteria called Nirosomonas start to breed, causing a nitrate spike. This is the second stage of the nitrogen cycle.

The third stage occurs when nitrospira bacteria breed converting the dangerous nitrite into less harmful nitrates. Once this occurs it is safe to add fish. Add the fish gradually, testing the water every couple of days, partially changing the water if there is too much ammonia or nitrite in it. This cycle takes place over a few weeks so it is important to keep testing the water so that you know which stage of the cycle you are on.

There are three test kits that are a must for any fish tank owner, to monitor the nitrogen cycle, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate testing kits. You also need a pH testing kit to check the water for acidity. This is important because if there is too much of a difference in the acidity level of the tank they lived in before you bought them, they may die of stress or shock.

Once your tank is established you do not need to keep on testing all the time. However, you still need to check the water for nitrates. Even though nitrates are not as harmful as the nitrites and ammonia, too much nitrate can also be detrimental to the health of your fish. To avoid any kind of problems, make it your habit to check the water quality and carry out regular water changes so that your fish are healthy and active. You can control the nitrate build up by adding plants and nitrate eating fish to your tank and monitoring the quality of water.

Setting Up a Freshwater Fish Aquarium

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Buying a new freshwater fish aquarium may seem like an easy task. But actually there is a lot of planning and research that goes into buying an aquarium. You have to choose the right freshwater fish aquarium. The perfect aquarium should be one that is within your budget and also a place the fish can live happily.

There are numerous factors you must consider when you buy a freshwater fish aquarium. Some of these factors include getting the right sized aquarium, cleaning the aquarium, and figuring out what to put in the aquarium.

First you need to find the right sized freshwater fish aquarium. Too small an aquarium and your big fish will be very uncomfortable. At the same time, you need to make sure the size of your room is adequate to fit a freshwater fish aquarium. Be sure you use a tape measure to get accurate measures of the space you need to put your aquarium.

Do some research and pick out some items you want to put in your freshwater fish aquarium to make it look fancy. You can put things like a toy castle or some plants. These should help make your aquarium look good.

Find out what type of freshwater fish you plan on putting in your aquarium. Some fish are predatory and may eat other fish that you have in your tank.

You need to know how to clean your freshwater fish aquarium. For example, algae will grow in your aquarium so you will need to clean it. You can put fish in the aquarium that specifically eat algae. You will also need to put in a filter.

Another method for cleaning the freshwater fish aquarium is to put plants in there. Plants are beneficial in that they get rid of nitrates in the water.

Setting up a freshwater fish aquarium is not simple task. If you do your research you should be able to set one up easily though.

The Stunning Emperor Angelfish : Care And Requirements

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus Imperator) is among three of the most recognizable angels in the hobby today. The other two are the queen angelfish (Holacanthus Ciliaris) and the French Angelfish (Pomacanthus Paru). It is the most popular member of the genus Pomacanthus. It is also known as the Imperator Angelfish.

One of the most distinctively colored marine angelfish, its dark blue body is streaked by yellow lines, while a black band lined with neon blue covers its face. Its tail is known to come in two colors, orange or yellow. Juvenile Emperor angelfish are just as stunning. Its entire body is filled with white concentric circles on a deep blue body.

The Emperor angelfish is commonly found throughout the Indo-Pacific ocean, Red Sea and even the Great Barrier Reefs in Australia. As juveniles, Emperor angelfish provide cleaning services to other fish in the wild. They consume any parasites that maybe present on the bodies of other fishes. Not a cheap fish, juveniles usually cost between $60 to $80 USD while i’ve seen some large show quality adults fetch up to $400 usd before.

Most species within the genus Pomacanthus are bully’s in one form or another. The emperor angelfish is aggressive towards other large angels and is very hostile towards other emperors. Fishes not from the Pomacanthidae family are generally ignored. Might bully butterfly fish and large tangs but generally ignores them.

The emperor angelfish attains lengths of up to 16 inches in the wild. That translates into lengths of up to 10 to 11 inches in the aquarium as angelfish rarely achieve their full length in captivity. At that length it is still a big fish that needs larger aquariums to really do well. A 150 gallon is the bare minimum while a 200 gallon or larger aquarium is recommended as they need large amounts of space to swim in.

The Emperor Angelfish is not considered reef safe. Though you may see some Emperor Angelfish housed in reef aquariums, they’re better suited to fish-only aquariums. In the wild their diet is made up of coral, sponges, tunicates and algae. They should be offered a good variety of foods from algae based foods like nori/seaweed to meaty foods like krill and mysis shrimp. New Life Spectrum offers excellent pellets that are very balanced. Formula Two is a balanced food that is pretty god for your Emperor Angelfish. It contains a mix of seafood and an extra portion of algae for herbivorous fish. They only come in three forms, frozen cube, pellets and flakes.

Angel Formula by Ocean Nutrition is by far the most complete food you can offer your Emperor Angelfish. This food was developed with large angelfish in mind, they contain fresh seafood, vitamins, marine sponges and fresh algae. Angel formula is only offered in frozen cube form.

You can either buy branded seaweed or get some from your local supermarket (prices may vary). They can be very cheap or very expensive depending on the brand.

When buying from a supermarket, make sure the nori is unflavoured/unspiced. Just get regular, plain nori. Raw nori if it is available. Attach the seaweed/nori to a clip and stick in onto the side of the aquarium.

Build Koi Fish Pond

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

The location of your pond is very important. It needs to be close to the house for electricity. It also needs to be out of direct sunlight, so the water doesn’t get too hot. The shade is good, but then you have leaves and roots to deal with too.

Do you want goldfish or koi? Koi are very beautiful and hardy. However they can grow to be three feet in length. This is important to consider. If you want a small pond you should probably go with the goldfish.

The depth of the pond also needs to be planned. It should be deep enough to protect them from freezing and protect them from predators. It also need to allow plenty of room for your fish to swim.

You also need some type of ledges and or plants to help provide your fish shelter. Do a little research to figure out what type of plants are best for your area.

Several types of materials are used for building your pond. You can use concrete, but beware the lime can kill your fish. Premolded liners are very common. They are simple to set up, but they can be a little small. Flexible liners are good if you have a unique design for your pond. Rubber liner can be bought specifically for pond use. That way it’s fish friendly.

Figure out your design and get your hole dug before buying your liner. This way you have accurate measurements and you don’t run out of liner.

Decorating your pond is the most fun. You can do almost anything. You can have islands, terraces, waterfalls, fountains, different plants, and neat lights.

Plants are important for maintaining a healthy environment. There is several different kinds of plants, floating shallow and submerged. Mix and match them to create a stunning look.

Caring For Tropical Fish

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Tank maintenance is one of the most important parts of having an aquarium. The tank must be vacuumed at least once every two weeks. You need to do a 10-20% water change every week. Once a year you should completely start over. Drain all water, clean the tank, and rinse the gravel.

Aeration in your tank is crucial for having healthy fish. The filter will not provide enough oxygen. You should have at least one device for a 10-20 gallon tank and two for a tank that is larger than 30 gallons.

Turn off the lights! Fish need to sleep too. Turn the lights out at night so they can sleep. They need about 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.

When feeding fish you don’t have to feed the same old food everyday. Fish crave different types of food. First you need to find out if your fish are insectivores, carnivores, herbivores, omnivores. Then you can feed them different things according to their preference.

There is four groups of fish food. The most common flake food and frozen food, live food, and household food. Be careful with the live food because they can carry diseases that can infect your fish.

What do I do when algae takes over? Some things to try to decrease your algae growth are algae eaters, buy some aquarium plants, decrease the light in your aquarium, scrap the glass of your aquarium, and do water changes more regularly.

Buying fish for your new aquarium is exciting. Fight the urge to buy the cool ones and get the hardy ones instead. Sometimes is takes awhile for your tank to adjust and to get your water the way it needs to be.

There is three different types of filters for aquariums. They are a box filter, an under gravel filter, and an external power filter. The under gravel filter is a good option. It requires less maintenance and has more aeration for your fish.

Where To Find The Pike

Monday, July 6th, 2009

A pike is a fish that is usually very easy to catch. There are however a few things you need to know. To illustrate these points we will use an example.

There are many similarities in the animal kingdom. When watching animal programs you can see these similarities, and the differences if pay attention. Wolves and lions are similar in many ways, but there is one thing that separates them in particular.

These differences can also be found among fish. The salmon hunts in a similar way as the wolf. It chases its pray until it reaches it, and then eats it. Usually it tries to swim at a moderate speed to save energy and wear out what it is chasing.

The pike on the other hand can be better compared to a lion. The lion lies in the grass hiding and waiting for its prey to come by. It then uses its fantastic pace over short distances to get the animal. The pike is in a way working in the same manner. It lies on the bottom waiting for fish to swim by.

Does this information do us any good when we are fishing? Of course it does. It tells us where we should look for the pike. And that can be the difference between catching one and going home with an empty bag. And now we know that the pike likes places it can hide.

Secondly, we learn that the pike often is close to the bottom. This is because there is more places to hide there. This is where we want to fish for pike.

What should we use as a bait to catch a pike then? The best option would probably be a wobbler. It has everything that a pike looks for and it resembles not only a fish, it resembles an injured fish. An injured fish is always an easier target for the pike and will be much more effective. Another option is live bait.
