Ocean Treasures
The ocean contains many treasures. There are some which are discovered while a majority of them are still undiscovered. The ones which are undiscovered hold a great potential for us to exploit.
Fishing has been practiced for over thousands of centuries. Nutritionally, fisheries provide almost 16% of the world’s totally protein. Today 90 million tonnes of fish are caught in the oceans each year.
The commercial fishing industry has not only obtained fish for us to eat but also for making ornaments. There has been a rising trend of aquaculture, for example: fish farming. The marine species can be grown under controlled conditions.
Did you know that sea contains gold four hundred times more than land? There has been mining of sea gold on the coasts of Alaska. If all the gold in the sea were fully exploited then everybody on Earth would have more than 4kgs of gold each.
The bodies of dead sea creatures over the years have decomposed and been compressed under the Earth’s layers; this has given produced oil as a result over thousands of years. Over one fifth of earth’s oil demand is being met with the oil that is coming from sea at the moment. Norway tops the list of the biggest offshore oil producers.
The sea is also not just a large store of oil reserves that can be used to generate power; the tides can be harnessed to meet the earth’s energy needs too. The world’s first energy plant was built in France in River Rance. Tidal energy is eco-friendly and a renewable source of energy that does not harm the environment nor deplete earth’s resources.
We obtain salts from the sea as well. 66 million tonnes of salt is are taken out each year. This amount is equal to three Egyptian pyramids.
Since the seaweeds are a rich source of calcium and minerals they are eaten as veggies in East Asia. They are used as a fertilizer in Ireland as natural manure. And their other uses include thickening the ice-cream, making shampoo, explosives and even toothpaste!
