The Future Of Seas

The three-fourth is water, of your body and even of the earth. That which is in the earth holds a lot of potential for us. Imagine all future possibilities that could use the treasures of the oceans on a large scale to make us less dependent on resources found onshore.

There have been some developments. For example longest under-sea fibre optics cable connects countries from Germany to Japan and Australia. It carries 4000 encyclopaedia worth of information in a second!

Submersibles are the futuristic mode of transport that will take the explorers to the deepest parts of the oceans. These sea vessels require a mechanism to lose weight to rise and sink. But Deep Flight II that has been invented by Graham Hawkes stays the same weight and flies like an airplane.

The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion ships run in water power. They take up warm water on the earth’s surface. And produce electricity!

The construction of the largest cruise liner is already going on. It is known as the Floating City. Almost 50,000 people can live here!

Also we should no longer dream of a future of living underwater. It is pretty real now to say the least. In the US, Aquarius is an undersea laboratory near the coast of Florida already.

Fish farming can be practice to experiment and breed newer and better varieties for fish. This would save us from the disasters of overfishing that is destroying our ecological systems and food chains. Also more fish can be reared rather than caught in the wild, by turning our fishermen into fish farmers if proper investment could be done in this field.

Yet the sea holds the answers to a variety of our problems only if we care to look into this partially exploited reserve. Here I’d like to quote a few verses from John Masefield’s (1878-1967), Sea Fever which was written in the year 1902: I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide - Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied.
