The Wonderful Blue Bottle Jellyfish - The Man Of War

Jellyfishes are truly remarkable creatures. Abstract looking, translucent, glowing they are really one of the most beautiful inhabitants of seas and oceans. And the fact that most of their body consists of water is really interesting. However there are some kinds of jellyfish that aren’t so attractive on the outside, but their anatomy is also remarkable. But the biggest attraction for people is the outside of the medusa and the colors and lights it has. And we won’t be exaggerating if we say that the Blue bottle jellyfish is one of the most beautiful and interesting species of the jellyfish class.

The Blue bottle jellyfish gets its name because of its form and color - when on the land it has a bottle-like form and a blue color. However the Blue bottle jellyfish name is used mainly in Australia and the lands of New Zealand. For the rest of the population the Blue bottle jellyfish is usually named the Portuguese Man o’ War due to the fact that it looks like a Portuguese battleship which was used n the past. However the forms and color of the Blue bottle jellyfish are not the most interesting things about it. The strangest fact that we know for the Blue bottle jellyfish is the thing that its body is made by different smaller organisms called zooids.

The Blue bottle jellyfish eats mainly small ocean creatures like fish, plankton and others. The first thing which the Blue bottle jellyfish does when capturing a creature is to envelope it using its tentacles and afterwards inject a venom in it, which has a paralyzing effect and therefore will render the prey unable to move or fight back. Not many jellyfishes can use their tentacles to envelope their prey, but the Blue bottle jellyfish has very strange tentacles. Their tentacles are covered with small barbed-wire-like hooks which allow them to easily attach to the prey and disable its movement.

The Blue bottle jellyfish isn’t considered a mortal threat to humans since there haven’t been any accidents in which a person has died due to a sting from a Blue bottle jellyfish. However if you get stung by a Portuguese Man o’ War you should try to wash the stung place without touching and use ice to relieve the pain which will be quite strong. You should quickly seek intervention from a doctor who will most likely take extra measures to stop the spread of the venom as quickly as possible and relieve the pain as much as he can.

Another fabulous fact that we have found about the Blue bottle jellyfish is the technique it uses to move. Instead of relying in the pulsations of its body it uses sea currents and wind to move around. The Blue bottle jellyfish resides mostly on the top of the sea surface or ocean, but if sees a threat it can immediately submerge.
